Our finished design included a parabola shaped cone, 3 fins that were made of tin that were evenly spaced out around the rocket, and clay placed at the top of the rocket for weight.  We choose our cone shape to be a parabola because when we were researching we found out that the parabola shape created the least drag, and was more aerodynamic, and this shape did really well in tests. We choose to put 3 fins on our rocket because in test modals 3 fins did the best and cause the rocket to go the highest. We also place our rockets fin more toward the bottom because we discovered through research the lower the fins were placed the more effective they were. The fins we choose that we chose were also made out of tin because that was the material that were thought would cut through the air the best and create the least

amount of drag but sill stay sturdy. And to find out where we were going to place our fins  we measured the circumference which came out to be 23 cm, and then we divided that by 3 which was 7.6 cm and then we place our fins 7.6 cm apart so the would be evenly space out around the rocket. We choose to put clay at the top of our rocket because it added weight and made the center of mass to be more toward the top of the rocket and when we research we found that rockets with a center of mass that was more toward the top went a lot higher. And lastly we filled 1/3 of our rockets volume with water because in test that amount did the best.

Every good idea has its flaws.  Our rockets definitely had its problems.  It started off with us finding ideas.  We had to research to find the best rocket.  Then it was with our first rocket that was a failure.  This is because it was way to big and wouldn't handle the pressure.  Then once we made our second rocket, when it came back down it severely damaged the clay nose cone.  So after that we had to make another.  Also there was hot glue on the bottle so we aren't 100% sure it will not blow up.  We also had to find another rocket so we would have one.

progress report

Today for our final we chose to do the magazine.  In this we all insert an article about a topic.  My topic was the problems that we have encountered along the way (which is alot to write about).  As for our rocket, we finished making the third one.  In our group we discussed how our rocket was related to newtons laws.  Like how, when the water exerts force on the ground, the ground pushes back with equal force.  Also how the bottle wont go anywhere unless we pressurize it.  Lastly is the law of interia and that and object wants to keep moving in one direction.

after our launches on thursday and friday our nose cone was dented severely so we made another rocket.  We think that our success is because of the fins.  This is because they are very sturdy and made of tin.   I don't think we will launch another until the final contest because we don't want the cone to be destroyed.

Today we launched for the first time.  We had our doubts but we were nicely surprised by our results.  First we found the angle of the rocket which was 80 DEGREES!  Then we did the equation 50*tan(80).  Our final result was 243.3 meters or 850 feet!  we may have done the calls wrong but it still looked like it went very high.

Today we finished our second rocket.  It really looks good with our new fins.  We added the fins in the perfect location.  We have 3 fins which, based on our simulator did better than 4 fins.  We where able to place the fins in the ideal location by meausuring the curcumferance with a string, then we divided that by 3 and hot glued the fins on.  For the material we used metal from my house.

Design & Construction

The first rocket we made was a failure so we had to start over. But anyways here is how we construed our second rocket The first step in making our rocket was pressurizing our smart water bottle. Then we made a parabolic at the top of the bottle by using clay. Then we put duck tape over the clay at the top to make it smooth and to stay. Then we calculated the circumference and divided that by three then we knew how far apart the 3 fins should be. Then we placed the 3 fins in their proper spots. And after we did that we were done and ready to launch our rocket.
